Free, compulsory education

Children in Denmark must receive 10 years of compulsory education starting in August in the year in which they turn six years old.

Alternatives such as private independent schools and residential continuation schools, where parents have to pay school fees, exist as well. It is also possible to teach your child at home, but very few people choose this option.

Reception classes

Bilingual children with a Danish residence permit valid for at least six months, including children with refugee status, are covered by the general rules on education. In those cases where a pupil, upon admission to a primary or lower secondary school, speaks too little Danish to be able to follow normal classes, the child will be taught Danish outside the normal class, for example in special reception classes. The Municipality of Syddjurs has established reception classes for bilingual children at three schools in the municipality: Mørke School, Rønde School and Skelhøje School. The district school will refer pupils who need to be taught in a reception class.

SFO - After school clubs

All municipal schools in the Municipality of Syddjurs have an after-school club, also known as the SFO, where children in Years 0-3 are looked after once lessons have finished for the day. The after-school clubs focus on supporting the development of your child’s personal, social and cultural competencies. In the after-school clubs, children have ample opportunity to play with their friends and cultivate new friendships, while their imagination and creativity are stimulated through enjoyable activities and games both indoors and out. Membership of the after-school club is voluntary and is paid for by the parents.
