Day care

All children in Denmark are guaranteed a place in a childcare institution from when they are 26 weeks old and until they start school.

In certain municipalities, this day care guarantee is valid for a longer period. It means that your child is guaranteed a place in a nursery, with a childminder or in a kindergarten within three months of you having applied for a place.

Most children are cared for in a childcare institution, but you are also able to have your child looked after in a private home.

Day nurseries/crèches
Day nurseries/crèches receive children aged 0-3 years and employ qualified social educators and assistant social educators. At nursery, your child’s development, well-being, play and learning will be supported and encouraged, preparing it to start in kindergarten.

Childminding
Like the nurseries, childminding is for children aged 0-3 years. Your child is looked after at a childminder’s private home, where the children are able to spend their time in a homely atmosphere engaging in all the normal activities this involves. The childminder will plan the day according to the children’s needs, well-being and development.

Kindergarten
A kindergarten is a day care institution which cares for children from the age of 3 and until they start school. Kindergartens employ qualified social educators and assistant social educators. At a kindergarten, your child will be exposed to many different experiences and activities, preparing it for the challenges it will encounter at school.

Age-integrated institutions
The Municipality of Syddjurs has age-integrated institutions for children aged 0-6 years which receive children from when they are 24 weeks old and where they can stay until they start school. Qualified social educators and assistant social educators are employed at the institutions, and together with your child they create a rich range of experiences and activities.

Private childcare under the free choice scheme
Parents of young children in the Municipality of Syddjurs can choose to receive a contribution for a private childcare scheme instead of a place at a municipal childcare institution or childminder.

You are eligible for a contribution:
• if you live in the Municipality of Syddjurs
• from when your child is 0 years and until he/she starts or is able to start Year 0 at school
• in special cases and following an assessment if a parent receives maternity/paternity benefit

SFO - After school clubs
All municipal schools in the Municipality of Syddjurs have an after-school club, also known as the SFO, where children in Years 0-3 are looked after once lessons have finished for the day. The after-school clubs focus on supporting the development of your child’s personal, social and cultural competencies. In the after-school clubs, children have ample opportunity to play with their friends and cultivate new friendships, while their imagination and creativity are stimulated through enjoyable activities and games both indoors and out. Membership of the after-school club is voluntary and is paid for by the parents.
