Day care
The day care options available depend on your child’s age.
Childminding
Like the nurseries, childminding is for children aged 0-3 years. The children are looked after in the childminder’s own home, where they engage in activities depending on their needs, well-being and development.
Nurseries
Day nurseries/crèches receive children aged 0-3 years and employ qualified social educators and assistant social educators. At nursery, your child’s development, well-being, play and learning will be supported and encouraged.
Kindergartens
A kindergarten is a day care institution which cares for children from the age of 3 and until they start school. Qualified social educators and assistant social educators ensure that your child is offered a wide range of experiences and activities, preparing it for the challenges it will encounter at school.
An international kindergarten is opening in Aarhus in the autumn 2011.
Private childcare
Most children are cared for in a childcare institution, but you can also have your child looked after in a private home.
Parental payment
The municipality pays a large share of the costs of childcare, but the remaining part is paid by parents.
Guaranteed childcare
In certain municipalities, this day care guarantee applies for a longer period. It means that your child is guaranteed a place in a nursery, with a childminder or in a kindergarten within three months of you having applied for a place.
