New light railway in Aarhus
The establishment of the light railway must help to ensure that public transport in and around Aarhus is fast, efficient and environmentally friendly.
Greater Aarhus is the fastest expanding growth centre in Denmark, and new growth means new and increased public transport requirements for the area; more people need to be transported around Aarhus as well as to and from the surrounding areas.
First phase
The first phase of the light railway is projected to be a 12 km stretch from Aarhus city centre and along Nørrebrogade and Randersvej and via Skejby Hospital up to Lisbjerg. Here, the light railway will connect to Grenåbanen via a new connection to Lystrup.
In the city centre, the light railway connects to Grenåbanen, and via Aarhus’s main railway station there is a connection to Odderbanen. The first phase of the light railway will become an important element in developing new urban growth areas to the north of Aarhus in Lisbjerg, Elev and Skødstrup and to the south in Beder and Malling.
